This MS Excel spreadsheet shows the effect of variation on cycle time.
There are four partners:
1. People,
2. Process,
3. Technology (equipment in this example) and
4. Work To Do.
Variation is the "moment" when one of the four partners goes missing.
Adjust the "outages". Vary the throughput. Control when work is released. It's a toy. Play.
Observe the impact of your decisions on the Throughput vs WIP and Cycle Time vs WIP graphs. Try to optimize the Operating Curve (CT vs Utilization graph).
Hint: Keep an eye on "starts" -- especially that little check box about hourly job release! How does this apply to your situation?
